Description of the art:
Using a palette of vibrant blues, greens, and reds, this mural depicts a flowing, dreamlike landscape of mountains, water, and sky—evoking the deep connections between land, water, and spirit. At the heart of the imagery is Raven, a central figure in Tlingit stories and teachings.

In Tlingit culture, Raven was once white before being burned black while mischievously stealing fresh water to share with the world. Raven also brought the sun, moon, and stars to the earth—gifts that gave light, life, and rhythm to all beings. These stories remind us that Raven is both a creator and a giver, offering knowledge, resources, and balance.

In this mural, Raven is intertwined with salmon as they journey home to spawn—a powerful symbol of renewal and continuity. The White Raven represents the sacred relationship between land, water, and life, reminding us that while life constantly evolves, it is also deeply rooted across generations.

As human beings, we carry the inherent responsibility to be caretakers of salmon and the waterways they depend on. This mural invites viewer to reflect on where we come from, the teachings we carry, and who we want our future generations to become.

This mural will play a powerful role in protecting and advocating for water, land, and salmon interests by acting as a public storytelling tool that will raise awareness, preserve culture, and inspire action.

The mural will reflect and honor the cultural identity of many McKinley Care residents, approximately half of whom are Alaska Native. It is intended to serve not only as a powerful visual statement but as a source of pride and connection for the residents, staff, and the wider community. By celebrating Indigenous heritage in a prominent urban space, the mural aligns with the goals to bring color, meaning, and local identity to the built environment.

"I am honored to be the selected artist to create a mural that pays tribute to the elders who reside in this building. My hope is that the artwork brings them a sense of pride and a feeling of being closer to home." - Crystal
